2009 Summer Program

"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task."

Barak Obama, Inaugural Address

AJSS wants to give young Jewish teens the opportunity to put their Jewish values into action this summer by serving those in need. We are sponsoring two trips this summer -- one to Amarillo, Texas, and one to Kansas City, Kansas, working in both communities with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. These are return trips for AJSS -- we were in Amarillo in 1985 and Kansas in 1998 -- and we are looking forward to the positive impact we can have in these communities. Our trip to Kansas City this summer will be geared to more observant participants and will keep kosher and refrain from driving and spending money on Shabbat. In all other ways, it will be a typical AJSS summer filled with hard work, fun activities and great friends.

The American Jewish Society for Service links social conscience to Jewish consciousness, engaging teenagers in acts of tikkun olam—repairing the world—one house, one park, one community center at a time.

The mission of the AJSS is to build Jewish leaders. Our summer program inspires teens to put their Jewish values into action as they provide significant service to communities in need.
